This area was badly hit by hurricane Katrina. All along the streets you could still (6 years later) see the damage it caused. We saw some houses that were completely gone, all that was left was the porch and the blocks that kept the house up from flooding. The houses that were still standing were in bad shape.
On a positive note, there had been a lot of rebuilding and you could see some new houses up on some crazy high stilts. This is one of the ones we saw:
